When I was younger, one of the first things I did when I got my very first paycheck was to get a web host, purchase a domain, and started my very own blog. At that time, it was really just pure blogging, not like the e-commerce / google ads shit nowadays. I say this because that’s what “blogging” has evolved into - almost everything’s about monetisation now (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
At that time, there was Blogger, LiveJournal… can’t remember what else were as big as these two. But having your own domain was like a cool thing back then, rather than having your blog url ending with the usual blogger(dot)com .
Fast forward 20+ years, I’m still maintaining my domain, still paying my web host, but I’m wondering should I even bother to continue. I hardly blog nowadays - whenever I want to write something, I find myself reaching for that Apple Pencil and scribble my thoughts on my iPad mini and save them into Apple Notes instead. I tried to use my site as my own travel journal, and but after a couple of trips I realised I would often procrastinate for way too long before I could convince myself to sit down and write. And well, you know, as one gets older, the memory kinda deteriorates along the way too…
I can’t say I’ve lost my passion for writing. I just don’t have the urge to write as much as I did twenty over years ago…
I have about another 5 months before I need to renew my domain and web hosting plan. It’s time to start mulling over this…
